Welcome to Animal Emergency & Referral Hospital,  
we are located in Lee's Summit , a suburb 20 miles east of Kansas City.   We are a 24-hour referral Hospital devoted to emergency and critical care medicine and surgery, with support from Ophthalmology, Dentistry and Dermatology.  
 
Mission Statement

We work closely with your regular veterinarian, utilizing our specialists for chronic or challenging cases. Patients needing intensive care after-hours are transferred to us on nights, weekends and holidays. Our facility is fully staff with knowledgeable and skilled professionals, 24 hours a day,
7 days a week.

Policies & Procedures

There is an initial consultation fee, which includes the veterinarian’s examination of your animal. We will provide you with a written estimate for any additional diagnostics, treatments and medications. A deposit is required for all hospitalized patients. Fees for services must be paid in full when your animal is discharged. For your convenience, payment may be made with Mastercard, Visa, Discover, cash and check.
 
Where We've Been
 
On June 1, 1995, we opened our doors. At the time, it was only a little hole In the wall, purchased at 3920 Lower South Noland Road. Since then, we have made two moves, gained many more doctors and technicians, and a state-of-the-art facility that gives us the ability to live up to our name.
 
Our first location was in a strip mall. It was not the best clinic available by far, but it got the job done. At that point in time, there were two doctors and five technicians on staff. The referral side did not exist. Eventually, with the great OSCO / Walgreen's war, the building was purchased. We were forced to move to another location in Independence. This location was cozy as well. It was located off 35th Street and Noland Road. 
 
When the company began, our initial plan was to open a clinic in the Lee's Summit area. On October 1, 2001, we opened at our present location. At the time, we had three emergency doctors and five technicians. Dr. Hunkeler helped launch the referral side by offering ophthalmology services. Dr. Klausen and Dr. Groh soon joined the team, offering dentistry and dermatology services, respectively.
 
Now, over ten years after founding the company, we have grown to four referral doctors (Hunkeler,
Groh, Klausen and Winters), two emergency doctors (Winters, and Croucher, and at any given time, 14 plus technicians.
 
Dr. Winters plans for more specialists in the future, such as in internal medicine and surgery. He would also like to expand the emergency services to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
